So far Peter has clearly taught us greatness of our salvation and hope. He did not leave us to do what ever we wanted after we have received this salvation, but he called us to love God by being holy, living in a reverent fear of God, and to love one another sincerely, earnestly and with a pure heart. Bottom line because of this salvation we have received we should grow in our love for God and our love for others.

In verses 4-5, Peter explains our identity in Christ and our purpose for Christ.
