In today’s verses some say James gives the toughest, prophetic judgment given in the New Testament. This is not the first time he has dealt with the ungodly rich. First, he is encouraging the believers not to envy this group and is leading into the next verses about how we respond to this group and each other. Next recognize in this passage he does not use the word brother and sisters. Next, he does not give them a word of exhortation, nor command to repent. He is speaking of lost people who are wealthy and oppressive.
